Boating Classes

Owning a boat is a big responsibility and safety is of utmost importance. All boat owners and their family members should consider taking boating classes. Not only will you learn how to be safe on the water, your entire family can participate together. In addition to learning the basics of boating, boating classes can teach you how to sail, navigate, or race, depending on your interests and goals.

Types of Boating Classes

Boating classes come in many forms from boat safety classes to preparing for certification by the U.S. Coast Guard. Below are a few common boating classes to give you an idea about the possibilities.

• Basic boat skills classes – These classes are designed to teach boaters about the rules of boating, hazards boaters might encounter, boating equipment, basic first aid and safety, and drowning and hypothermia prevention. Basic boat skills classes typically take place in a classroom, not on the water.

• Texas boating safety classes – The state of Texas, like many states, requires all operators of specific vessel types to enroll in a basic boater education class and earn their boater education certification card. If you will be operating a personal watercraft, 14-foot or longer sailboat, or a motorboat powered by a 10 horsepower or above motor, you must participate in boater education and become certified.

• Sailing classes – Sailing requires a great deal of skill and knowledge. Learning the ropes by taking a sailing class is the best way to ensure that you know your tacks from your jibes. Not only should the skipper learn how to sail, the entire family should take sailing classes.

• Charter boat captain classes – Want to be a captain? How about a mate? The U.S. Coast Guard requires licensing. Classes are available across the nation to prepare you for earning your desired mariner’s license.

• Specialized boating skills classes – Want to learn how to read a navigation chart? Want a better understanding of tides and currents? Want to learn about marine weather or using specialized navigational equipment? Need to work on your docking and boat handling skills? Boating classes cover all types of boating skills. Check with your local branch of the U.S. Coast Guard or your yacht club for classes that best meet your needs.
